Reflections After the Storm

Gouache Watercolor on Watercolor Board

y2000

Norfolk, VA

The whole of the bow of the sailboat was reflected in that one small spot.

The after clouds of the storm swirled and danced in brilliant and contracting colors, and yet it was the imaged subtleness of the water that gripped your eye.

Reflections, shadows, algae deposits, and drops of water from the rain soaked rope making ringlets on the surface of the water. What a challenge!

Stumpy Lake - Virginia Beach, VA

The reflections of these trees became more the subject than the originals. They appear longer from this chosen angle and not quite so strong. Thus, we know it is reflection, and not an extension of the sky-tall trees themselves, that reach to our toes as we stand on the shore.

It's like .... the extension of ourselves reaching to the heavens.

Can you imagine that?

Where the Big Guys Hang Out

Gouache Watercolor on Watercolor Board

y2001

Middle Ground Lighthouse -Chesapeake Bay, VA

There they were, preening themselves on the rail of the lighthouse that nobody can see from the land. A semi-private little club that these big shots have taken over and think they completely control.

Just wait until a bigger bird comes along and shoos them from their ensconced perches.

Life simply works that way.

Shades of Jamie Wyeth

Gouache Watercolor on Watercolor Board

y2001

Somewhere around Nags Head, NC

Jamie Wyeth once did a painting of a pumpkin sitting on a bail of hay. It was even backlit like this one. But his painting encompassed a pumpkin on a hay bail in a landscape.

This painting concentrates on the essence of the Wyeth landscape. It is a
pumpkin and hay-scape. No land showing.

I like mine better... still a lot of visual power, coming to terms with
limited space.

Nature Reclaims her Own

 Little Creek - Norfolk

There's not much to it now, as far as usefulness to humans goes, but once it
was the walkway to Annabelle's, a ferry boat that became a restaurant. It burned
in the mid-eighties.
Anyway, who cares about that when there is such rich bounty of colors
and textures to treat the eye. I was completely smitten by its beauty.

Well, maybe it ain't a pretty picture, but somebody had to paint it.
I'm glad I was he.

Fading Light

Gouache Watercolor on Watercolor Board

Norfolk, VA

The captain was a tough old man and heavy of body. He had sonar gear aboard and could find almost anything lost in the Chesapeake Bay.

His daddy had owned the boat before him. It was of a deadrise design with an unusual shape and size, and he said “there were fifty-five of them built originally now this one and another one were the only ones left. The rest had crashed or sunk or something.”
He, the boat and the day are certainly in a fading light.

The tall grass was loose and free as the wind blew across the landscape the day I was there .

This is where the Jamestown guys first landed in sixteen-oh-seven.

A View of Cape Hatteras

Gouache Watercolor on Watercolor Board

y2001

Cape Hatteras, NC

This painting shows the lighthouse where it now stands. It was moved last year to protect it from the encroaching sea.

What an exacting operation that was... made news all
over the country! But, back in the dunes a ways, it's safe, again, at least for now.

Somehow, the lone figure on the beach mimics the singleness of purpose
reflected in the lighthouse itself.

The Last of the Failed Jetty

Gouache Watercolor on Watercolor Board

Cape Hatteras, NC

It was supposed to hold back the ever-pounding surf that threatened the famous lighthouse, then sitting just a little ways over the dune.

They finally had to move the lighthouse to keep the ocean from
claiming the landmark as its own.

One day it will all be gone, but for now, it's nice to have it here.

Portrait of a Pelican

Gouache Watercolor on Watercolor Board

A lot of times when I show this painting, I get quoted the little rhyme
about "its bill can hold more that its belly can."
Everybody loves pelicans, except the fish. Pelicans are strange and have an almost
mystical quality to them.
I wonder what this one was thinking, right then.

I always like the rust on the hulls of boats. It adds colorful seasoning to the painting and gives boats a lot of character.

I’m sure the captain and the crew don’t think about it until its put in for a fresh coat of paint. Then the process starts all over again.

Stumpy Lake Trees #2

Stumpy Lake - Virginia Beach

Here are some of those famous stumps for which the lake was named.

The cormorant didn't care what we named it... his residency was temporary, and he
didn't have to shell out a few bucks for staying over a few days.

He ate what he could catch, then off he went to the next watering hole.

That's my idea of it anyway.

I've done several paintings of Redbank. It's a great little place for such scenes as this, and a lot more similar to it.
I seem to revisit Redbank a lot, if not physically, then in my mind.

Fool's Gold

Gouache Watercolor on Watercolor Board

y2001

Eastern Shore, VA

Whether by accident or by some philosopher's design, the "L" in the word "GOLD" was actually missing. It certainly spoke volumes to me on several levels. The most obvious is, that if you own a boat of any kind, sooner or later, it becomes something different than you ever imagined. What was once thought of as gold, (i.e. valuable) becomes your god (in a sense, of course). This can easily be extended to many other material things.

Cannery Water Tower

Gouache Watercolor on Watercolor Board

y2001

Eastern Shore, VA

It was morning and  a dark storm was approaching from the west. It gave great drama to an otherwise ordinary old and rusted water tower. The sun, at my back, lit it up like a torch, almost, as the angry clouds churned the sky.

The contrast was overwhelming.
